On International Women's Day, the world's third largest asset manager installed this bronze statute of a defiant girl taking on Wall Street's famous bull. This action, literally and figuratively, speaks volumes as the key message behind the installation of the statute was that its time for corporations to get their acts together and bring more equal representation of women to their corporate boards. The message was even stronger as the asset management company State Street Corp, said it votes against boards if a company fails to take steps to increase its number of members who are women. State Street plans to send a letter to 3,500 companies asking the companies to act.
"One of the most iconic images on Wall Street is the charging bull. So the idea of having a female sort of stand against the bull or stand up to the bull just struck us as a very clever but also creative and engaging way to make that statement," Lori Heinel said. "Even though it's a little girl, her stance is one of determination, forwardness, and being willing to challenge and take on the status quo."
Brilliant and compelling story of art as a disruptive force in our society, and the power that companies can have by literally walking the talk, and acting on their principles for a greater purpose. Happy International Women's Day! Let's all find some creative and powerful actions to support equality and well-being of women everywhere today.
